Inertia and the Laws of Motion

Inertia is the name for the tendency of an object in motion to remain in motion, or an object at rest to remain at rest  unless acted upon by a force. This concept was quantified in Newtons First Law of Motion. The word inertia came from the Latin word iners, which means idle or lazy and was first used by Johannes Kepler. Inertia and Mass Inertia is a quality of all objects made of matter that possess mass. They keep doing what they are doing until a force changes their speed or direction. A ball sitting still on a table wont start rolling around unless something pushes on it, be it your hand, a gust of air, or vibrations from the surface of the table. If you tossed a ball in the frictionless vacuum of space, it would travel on at the same speed and direction forever unless acted on by gravity or another force such as a collision. Volker Mà ¶hrke / Getty Images Mass is a measure of inertia. Objects of higher mass resist changes in motion more than objects of lower mass. A more massive ball, such as one made of lead, will take more of a push to start it rolling. A styrofoam ball of the same size but low mass may be set in motion by a puff of air. Theories of Motion From Aristotle to Galileo In everyday life, we see rolling balls come to rest. But they do so because they are acted on by force of gravity and from the effects of friction and air resistance. Because that is what we observe, for many centuries Western thought followed the theory of Aristotle, who said that moving objects would eventually come to rest and needed continued force to keep them in motion. In the seventeenth century, Galileo experimented with rolling balls on inclined planes. He discovered that as friction was reduced, balls rolled down an inclined plane attained almost the same height rolling back up an opposing plane. He reasoned that if there were no friction, they would roll down an incline and then keep rolling on a horizontal surface forever. It wasnt something innate in the ball that caused it to stop rolling; it was contact with the surface. Newtons First Law of Motion and Inertia Isaac Newton developed the principles shown in Galileos observations into his first law of motion. It takes a force to stop the ball from continuing to roll once it is set in motion. It takes a force to change its speed and direction. It doesnt need a force to continue moving at the same speed in the same direction. The first law of motion is often referred to as the law of inertia. This law applies to an inertial reference frame. Corollary 5 of Newtons Principia says: The motions of bodies included in a given space are the same among themselves, whether that space is at rest or moves uniformly forwards in a straight line without circular motion. In this way, if you drop a ball on a moving train that is not accelerating, you will see the ball fall straight downward, as you would on a train that was not moving.

The Drinking Age Of The United States Should Be Lowered

An argument that many tend to dispute today, whether the drinking age of the United States should be lowered from 21 to 18. The drinking age for people to drink alcoholic beverages was made into law by the National Minimum Drinking Age Act. This ant enforced all states to raise their legal drinking age to 21. To get this law pass, the congress tried to strongarm the states, if the states did not comply, the government would take away their highway funds. Both arguments for it to be lowered and to keep it the same are beneficial in its own way, but to deny one side would either bring good or negative effects. Those who are against the drinking age to be lowered, argue mostly because of safety reasons. The other side argue that it the person†¦show more content†¦Second, lowering the drinking age may lead to lowered perception of risk.† (Tamika Z.) Teens will most likely go on a binge of drinking alcohol, due to it being lowered. This would cause more accidents associated with alcohol, such as, kidney failure or addiction to drinking. Teens who happen to do drugs may even have more deadly problems. The age 18 in the United States is a huge difference to a person’s status from being a kid to a young adult. At the age 18, you are allowed to vote for who you believe will be a good candidate in the next election. You can do many things with this age, many doors are open for you. However, it is still illegal for you to drink alcohol. In the eyes of the law, you are consider an adult. In those same eyes, you are still considered a minor. In the United States, it is illegal for a minor to drink or purchase any type of alcoholic beverage. The minor, being anyone under 21, is mostly looked towards a person’s late teen years to early adulthood. Legally teens are not allowed to drink, but they still find plenty of different ways to go against the law. Whether they drink at home or a party. Keeping the drinking age high, would only cause more problems than good. Teens most certainly rebel against the drinking age, because it is fun. 18 in America comes with many privileges , it is the ultimate mark in your life that you are officially an adult, but if you can t do something you want, you

Movie Overview Avengers Age of Ultron Essay Example For Students

Movie Overview Avengers: Age of Ultron Essay Avengers: Age of Ultron is the most stimulating movie out of the Marvel series and the best action movie for this year. The non-stop action and suspense of what was to come after the betrayal of an Avenger makes this movie a great introduction to the evolution of the Avengers. The Avengers: Age of Ultron picks up where it left off with The Avengers’ first movie trying to defeat Hydra’s constant quest for world domination. This movie introduces new characters such as Vison, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, and Ultron. Familiar faces like War Machine, Heimdall, Dr. Erik Selvig, S. H. E. I. L. D and Nick Fury all make appearances in this sequel. Ultron is a mechanical artificial intelligent being trying to rid the world of humans. The Avengers come together to stop him from destroying the world as we know it. This blockbuster movie will be one, if not the best Marvel movie to date in my opinion. It has all the depth and layers for a great movie which comes from having a strong foundation, and then it builds onto the storyline. Avengers: Age of Ultron is a great movie because Marvel found a way to give great informative details on all the Avengers characters that was not shown in previous movies, while bringing in treachery, unity and comedy, as well as, the superheroes uniting with unforeseen alliance. Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, and Captain America all had their own spinoff movies that told their beginnings. The first Avenger’s movie showed how they came together. With the prior Avenger movie the team is fighting to save the world against aliens. This sequel has Iron Man making sure that if there was ever another attack like the one The Avengers fought before, they would be well prepared. Iron Man creates Ultron, who is created to stop the possible threats towards mankind, but Ultron becomes the biggest threat himself. Ultron then enlists the help of the Maximoff twins who try to help bring down the team by using the Avenger’s fear and based on their past. Bringing this fear out gave a glimpse into each character’s past with facts that was unbeknownst before this movie. The creation of Ultron was mostly Iron Man’s idea with the help of Bruce Banner (Hulk); however, Iron Man decided to keep the rest of the Avengers in the dark about his creation. This is a good action movie because they overcome the bickering, the bad attitudes and reunite to defeat a common enemy. Because there are multiple personalities working together for a common goal, the audience does not know what will happen next, making the movie very suspenseful. Each of the member’s strengths plays a role in defeating Ultron. The Avengers uniting shows that teamwork will overcome evil. Especially, having the twin change sides and join the Avengers to defeat Ultron. The twins change of heart showed that although they felt wronged by the Avengers, they couldnt do the same by wronging the people of the planet. Creating this storyline keeps the true fans interested and brings new people into the world of Marvel. True comic book readers will not like Avengers: Age of Ultron because it differs from the actual comic book’s storyline. Most readers think that when a comic book is made into a movie that it should be a direct reflection of the series, which would be great to see but it will never allow people who don’t read the comic books to take an interest in them. With this current theme Wanda â€Å"Scarlet Witch† would have never seen the wrong decision ,that she made in aiding Ultron or join the Avengers if Pietro â€Å"Quicksilver† wouldn’t have died. The biggest factor to a great and successful movie is engaging all who watch it and make them want to see or read more. .u4c8fbf16d5ed4c142c68a4ec7863c73f , .u4c8fbf16d5ed4c142c68a4ec7863c73f .postImageUrl , .u4c8fbf16d5ed4c142c68a4ec7863c73f .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u4c8fbf16d5ed4c142c68a4ec7863c73f , .u4c8fbf16d5ed4c142c68a4ec7863c73f:hover , .u4c8fbf16d5ed4c142c68a4ec7863c73f:visited , .u4c8fbf16d5ed4c142c68a4ec7863c73f:active { border:0!important; } .u4c8fbf16d5ed4c142c68a4ec7863c73f .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u4c8fbf16d5ed4c142c68a4ec7863c73f { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u4c8fbf16d5ed4c142c68a4ec7863c73f:active , .u4c8fbf16d5ed4c142c68a4ec7863c73f:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u4c8fbf16d5ed4c142c68a4ec7863c73f .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u4c8fbf16d5ed4c142c68a4ec7863c73f .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u4c8fbf16d5ed4c142c68a4ec7863c73f .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u4c8fbf16d5ed4c142c68a4ec7863c73f .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u4c8fbf16d5ed4c142c68a4ec7863c73f:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u4c8fbf16d5ed4c142c68a4ec7863c73f .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u4c8fbf16d5ed4c142c68a4ec7863c73f .u4c8fbf16d5ed4c142c68a4ec7863c73f-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u4c8fbf16d5ed4c142c68a4ec7863c73f:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Specific cinematic techniques EssayAoU expanded the Avengers’ fanbase by changing the story line from the original comic book and adding new characters to the Avengers. Bloggers, critics and other entertainment reporters have all raved about how this movie can bring comic book lovers and new millennium fans to watch this movie together. Due to box office numbers the Avengers: Age of Ultron would be always considered Marvel’s best superhero movie for this year. Witnessing how each Avenger character develops into a collective superhero team makes the Avengers: Age of Ultron one of the most popular franchises as well as superhero movie of the year.

TV Violence and Children Essay Example For Students

TV Violence and Children Essay Children from the ages 6-11 spend more time watching television thanthey do in the classroom. The level of violence that they see on prime timetelevision is about five violent acts per hour and the level of violence onSaturday that includes cartoons morning programming is about 20 to 25 violentacts per hour. At this rate, the average American child will see 8,000 murdersbefore they finish elementary school! As a child sits in front of baby-sitting television, her eyes are gluedto the viewing of shoot em up rip em up kind of entertainment. We have toremember that the entertainment media plays an extremely powerful role in theformation of values and morals, to all youngsters minds of all ages, allsocioeconomic levels, and all levels of intelligence. These programs playwith kids minds; these programs have a tremendous negative effect on ourchildren. We, as a society, must save our future and take an active role inprotecting our children from the violence on our television. We will write a custom essay on TV Violence and Children specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Television cartoons often feature dehumanized characters, such asTransformers and the Ninja Turtles, who engage in the destructive acts ofviolence by fighting our real life social problems. With acts of violence, kidslearn to think thats how they should solve their problems. MTVs Beavis andButt-head encourages fire, smoking, foul language, drinking and stealing. Withthese bad attitudes seen depicted as normal on TV shows kids are lead tobelieve it is cool be have that type attitude Is this what we really want oursociety, especially our younger generation, to believe? If we truly thought that television had no impact on viewers, why wouldcompanies spend billion of dollars on television advertising? If commercialshave an effect, then so do the shows that the children watch. For example, youngsters mimic many of the violent acts that they see such as Beasvis and But-head. One day, a five year old boy watch his favorite cartoon, Beavis and Butt-head, and sees the characters pull one of the ir famous arson stunts. And theresult, he sets his own house ablaze and his younger sister is killed. Children do learn from television especially when they lack direct exposureor first hand experience with violent grotesque acts. These do take a toll onchildren and the way they will view life as they grow up. I know some who thatare sweet, innocent, full of dreams, hopes, laughter, and life. These kids havelearned about there environment from their parents, not by watching television. When I am a parent, I will not show programs with bodies flying around the roomand blood spurting ever where. At this point, the parents role must be towatch television with their children so they can help children understand thatviolence hurts people physically and emotionally. Our society should take a long hard look in the mirror; the values oftodays youth are reflections of the values of their elders. We should rememberthe words of the father in Harry Chapins song Cats in the Cradle when hecomes to realize his son Hes grown up just like me. My boy was just like me.Violence on the television is a very real problem is our culture. Wemost see that it only causes negative effects on our society. It is hard totell if the problem is the media or if the problem is in our values as a culture. We must help turn back the growing culture of violence as quickly as possible. The human toll on our society is too great to look the other way. .u1374e0d77d3ecae888c04f431259b6bb , .u1374e0d77d3ecae888c04f431259b6bb .postImageUrl , .u1374e0d77d3ecae888c04f431259b6bb .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u1374e0d77d3ecae888c04f431259b6bb , .u1374e0d77d3ecae888c04f431259b6bb:hover , .u1374e0d77d3ecae888c04f431259b6bb:visited , .u1374e0d77d3ecae888c04f431259b6bb:active { border:0!important; } .u1374e0d77d3ecae888c04f431259b6bb .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u1374e0d77d3ecae888c04f431259b6bb { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u1374e0d77d3ecae888c04f431259b6bb:active , .u1374e0d77d3ecae888c04f431259b6bb:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u1374e0d77d3ecae888c04f431259b6bb .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u1374e0d77d3ecae888c04f431259b6bb .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u1374e0d77d3ecae888c04f431259b6bb .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u1374e0d77d3ecae888c04f431259b6bb .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u1374e0d77d3ecae888c04f431259b6bb:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u1374e0d77d3ecae888c04f431259b6bb .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u1374e0d77d3ecae888c04f431259b6bb .u1374e0d77d3ecae888c04f431259b6bb-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u1374e0d77d3ecae888c04f431259b6bb:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Julius Caesar Argumentative EssayCategory: Music and Movies
